FIDA-Kenya, Kisumu 2009 / 2010

My name is Andrew Commins. I’m a family law barrister based in Bristol, UK but I’m currently living in Kisumu, Kenya, volunteering for FIDA-Kenya, an NGO seeking to promote gender equality in the law and through legal process. You can find out more about their excellent work at www.fidakenya.org.

I am working on a project to research and draft a code of conduct for the informal justice system in three principal tribal areas in the Nyanza / Western Kenya provinces. The code will hopefully act as a blueprint for similar collaborations with the informal justice system, as the formal legal system is invariably too expensive, distant, cumbersome and mistrusted.

I hope you enjoy reading the blog. If you’d like to contact me at all, please just email me. Apologies if some of the stuff is too gushing but it’s my first occasion in Africa and I have wanted to come here for many years so it’s a real ambition fulfilled!
